Bloom is a culture and lifestyle magazine, with high-quality production values, exquisite graphic design and photography, and writing that is sharp, knowing, and entertaining.
Each issue contains thought-provoking, relevant editorial about the area's people, arts, culture, entertainment, homes, gardens, food, wine, health, fitness, and family life.
Bloom is an independent, free magazine whose target audience is the city's working and retired adult population and visitors to Bloomington. Published bimonthly, 14,000 copies are available at more than 180 local retail businesses, hotels, and community centers.
Malcolm Abrams
Editor and Publisher
Malcolm Abrams is a magazine consultant, writer, and editor who fell in love with Bloomington and moved here in 2005.
For the past nine years he had served as Editor in Chief of Spa Finder Magazine, transforming it from an annual catalogue into an award-winning, bimonthly magazine. While editing Spa Finder, he also worked as a consultant for a variety of other clients.
Those clients included The McGraw Hill Companies for whom he repositioned Architectural Record magazine. Malcolm spent 14 months at McGraw Hill, eight of them as the magazine's interim Editor in Chief. Architectural Record went on to win a National Magazine Award for editorial excellence.
Other clients Malcolm has worked with include The National Auduban Society (repositioning American Birds and serving as interim Editor in Chief of Audubon Magazine), Murdoch Magazines, Advanstar Communications, Kelly Communications, Family Media, Brioni, Global Finance Magazine, and Miller Freeman, Inc.
For nine years, he worked for Rupert Murdoch, first as Managing Editor of the Star and then as Vice President/Editorial Director of Murdoch Business Magazines. In this latter capacity, he was responsible for 20 publications, repositioning several of them, including Travel Weekly, Meetings & Conventions, and Business and Commercial Aviation. Malcolm also served for two years as Group Editorial Director for the Miller Freeman, Inc. Travel Group.
Viking Penguin published Malcolm's first book, Future Stuff, written with researcher Harriet Bernstein. It was sold for publication in Great Britain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. A television pilot based on the book was produced by Aaron Spelling Entertainment. A sequel, More Future Stuff, also was published by Viking Penguin.
Malcolm's work has appeared in many magazines and newspapers including Ladies' Home Journal, Playboy, Longevity, Parents, and The Toronto Globe & Mail. His work has been syndicated by both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times syndicates.
Pat Bailey
Associate Publisher
Pat Bailey joined Bloom Magazine in May 2006 becoming the magazine's first Associate Publisher. Her responsibilities include advertising sales, marketing, circulation, and community relations.
A 1995 graduate of Indiana University, she previously served as Director of Advocacy and Events for the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, where she was responsible for coordinating fundraising efforts and business advocacy in the community.
Pat taught English in high school and middle school for eight years. At Bloomington High School South, she was co-creator of Project PRIDE, a program for at-risk freshman. In 2001, she was the recipient of the Monroe County Educator of the Year Award. She is also a past president of the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, an educational fraternity.
In addition to her work with Bloom Magazine, Pat owns social butterfly, a wedding and event planning business where she is a trendsetter in the field. She is a member of two local philanthropic sororities: Tri Kappa and Boys and Girls Club Auxiliary.
