Otaak Band – Master of the Sudanese Lyre at the Player’s Pub, $10, all ages

08:00 pm to 08:00 pm
Players Pub, 424 S. Walnut
http://www.otaakband.com

Otaak Band, the exciting cross-cultural collaboration between drummer Miguel Merino from Bloomington and the remarkable singer Ahmed Said Abuamna from the Beja community of Eastern Sudan, will be performing at the Player’s Pub on Sunday, January 26th 2014, along with local Middle Eastern ensemble Salaam. This concert is open to all ages, as the Player’s Pub has a reserved underage section.

Otaak Band will be performing music from their 2012 release Bejawiya, the first recording to take an ancient East-African lyre, the masankop, out of its traditional setting and feature it as the lead instrument in a contemporary ensemble. Banning Eyre, producer of Afropop Worldwide on NPR, says Otaak Band’s “best tracks are sensational.”
