Bloomington’s Joel Washington is competing in a contest in which the winners will get to show their work in a Florida art show called Art Basel Miami. The competition is sponsored by Bombay Sapphire gin’s Artisan Series. The two winners from the Miami show will then have their own exhibits at the Rush Arts Gallery in New York City.
Washington entered a painting of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a jazz musician in the 1960s and ’70s. He chose the painting because of Kirk’s ties to Bloomington. Kirk gave his last concert in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union in 1977. Later that night he passed away in Bloomington Hospital. This same painting was displayed two years ago in the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.
In order to have the chance to show his work in these major galleries, Washington needs you to vote for his painting. Voters can vote once a day.
