Artist Joel Washington was presented the City of Bloomington Living Legend Award at the City’s 17th annual Black History Month Gala in February. The self-taught artist’s boldly colorful paintings—many of them portraits of famous jazz and rock musicians—can be found throughout the community in galleries, restaurants, and departments across Indiana University, as well as at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. Eight of his paintings were featured at the Parallax Art Fair in London, England, in 2018.
