Tashi Phuntsok was born in 1975 in Norgayling, a Tibetan settlement in Bandara, Maharashta, India and emigrated to the United States in 1992. He began collecting old photographs and films of early Tibetan refugees in 2009, and the photos and film clips he found revealed living and working conditions more harsh and extreme than he had imagined. He found that many families were still living in poverty and unable to pay school fees for their children. He vowed then to find a way to help those children. Tashi has personally sponsored four Tibetan children and is currently providing college scholarships for two students. With funds raised from the public exhibitions of his collection, he hopes to provide college scholarships for more Tibetan students.
The collection consists of photos of Tibetan Refugees from 1959 to 1980s and rare photos of the 14th Dalai Lama and 10th Panchen Lama’s visit to India in 1956-1957. Two documentary films on “Islam in Tibet”, another about the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Dharmasala and short video clips on Tibetan refugees from 1960s to present day, will be shown.
Exhibit opens at 10 am. Lecture, video and reception begin at 2:00 pm.
Cost: Free and open to the public. Donations will go to Tibetan refugee scholarships
