What: Lake Monroe Watershed Ecotour (a Creative Aging Festival event)

When: Tuesday, May 20, 2014 – 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Who: Natural Bloomington Ecotours & More

Where: Meet at the Endwright Center at 9:45 a.m (631 W. Edgewood Dr. Ellettsville, IN). Tour departs via Rural Transit bus precisely at 10:00 am and returns to the center at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Cost: $25 – Reservations required, box lunch provided by Garden Villa Health

Join us for a Natural Bloomington Ecotours & More tour of Lake Monroe’s scenic watershed areas! We’ll experience Indiana’s largest body of water from several vantages, stop for brief strolls (accommodating differing degrees of mobility), discuss the historical importance of these wild areas, environmental sustainability, and will have opportunities for nature photography. A journal will be provided for reflection on our nature experience. Destinations include: Moore’s Creek, Hardin Ridge, Allen’s Creek, and Paynetown State Recreation Areas; Lake Monroe Dam, and North Fork Waterfowl Resting Area. Sponsored by Area 10 Agency on Aging, The Endwright Center, Natural Bloomington, Rural Transit, City of Bloomington Commission on Aging, Garden Villa, and Smithville Charitable Foundation.

About Natural Bloomington:
The mission of Natural Bloomington Ecotours & More is to celebrate and share Southern Indiana’s unique natural beauty through image, prose and ecotourism. It is a project of Bloomington-based environmental journalist, author and photographer Steven Higgs, who has spent 40 years exploring, photographing and writing about Southern Indiana.

About Your Tour Guide:
Steven Higgs worked as the chief environmental reporter at the Bloomington Herald-Times from 1985-96; then from 1996-2000, he served as the senior environmental writer at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Mr. Higgs has won more than three dozen awards for his writing; in 2009 & 2010, his articles for NUVO Magazine (Indianapolis) were awarded second and first places for best reporting on the environment by the Society of Professional Journalists. He is the author of Eternal Vigilance: Nine Tales of Environmental Heroism in Indiana (IU Press) and he is currently writing a guidebook on Southern Indiana natural areas.
