The Archives of Traditional Music Noon Concert/Lecture Series presents a workshop on Sacred Harp singing. Sacred Harp is an early American a cappella singing tradition with roots in New England and the South. Also known as “shape note singing,” Sacred Harp has a distinctive sound that has captivated singers for 250 years. It is communal, participatory music — we sing for each other, and we sing it loud! In this workshop local Sacred Harp singers will introduce you to the tradition and style of this unique music. Together we’ll learn several songs, including some familiar tunes in unfamiliar settings. Arise, my soul, awake, my voice!
Bloomington Sacred Harp is a small but mighty group that meets regularly to sing Sacred Harp music. All are welcome to join in; more info at: http://bloomingtonsacredharp.org/
