Nan Brewer, the IU Art Museum’s Lucienne M. Glaubinger Curator of Works on Paper, will discuss original drawings by Amedeo Modigliani from the museum’s collection.

Like its subject, this feature-length biopic of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) had a tragic history. The first director, Max Ophüls, died suddenly during filming; the second director, Jacques Becker, passed away within two years of its completion; and the actor, Gérard Philipe, was gravely ill and died at 36 (the same age as the artist he portrayed) before the film’s release. While these sad coincidences overshadowed the film, it is recognized for its cinematography and a narrative approach that is more of “a fantasy, a hallucination, a nightmare” than straight biography.
