When World War II threatened professional baseball by depleting the pool of players, team owners formed a women’s league to fill the gap. A League of Their Own stars Tom Hanks as washed-up ballplayer Jimmy Dugan, hired to coach a team of athletic and driven young women including Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), her younger sister Kit Keller (Lori Petty), Mae Mordabito (Madonna), and Doris Murphy (Rosie O’Donnell). This comic depiction of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League celebrates the young women who left their homes to become part of the league, gaining the opportunity to triumph in their skills, which had previously not been valued by society.
Celebrate International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, with this film directed by Penny Marshall. Members of the softball teams from Bloomington High Schools North and South will be present and will give a brief demonstration prior to the screening.
