“Giving back to the community where I grew up is pretty special,” says Dr. Brandy Deckard, an optometrist and native of Bedford, Indiana. “Getting to be a bigger part of that community is neat.”
Deckard, who owns Precision Eye Group, 322 S. Woodscrest Drive in Bloomington, is referring to the recent expansion of her business with the acquisition of Eyeconic Eyecare in Bedford.
The new location, rebranded as Precision Eye Group, has three doctors offering primary care: Dr. Diana Christensen, Lawrence Country native Dr. Luke Streich, and Dr. Jenna Dale, who specializes in vision therapy, which helps the eyes focus as a unit. Dr. Christensen and Dr. Dale will also practice at the Bloomington location.
Deckard, 38, purchased Eyeconic from Dr. Nathan McClain, who was in Deckard’s graduating classes at both Bedford North Lawrence High School and Indiana University School of Optometry.
“The business can be tricky,” Deckard says. “You have the patients, the optical department, and the business part.” And now there are two offices to run. “Fortunately, my husband [Ryan Deckard] is an accountant. Having medical and financial ability is a good combination.”
Eyeconic’s acquisition continues Precision’s growth. Since purchasing the Bloomington office in 2014 from Dr. Denise Howard, for whom she had interned and worked full time, Deckard has given the office “a complete makeover from floor to ceiling,” she says. That includes expanding the optical showroom and adding an additional exam room.
Deckard also brought on another doctor, Dr. Derek Bailey—a former Bloomington High School South and Wabash College baseball and basketball player who specializes in primary care and will soon provide sports vision therapy.
“Our growth has exceeded our expectations,” says Deckard, who will continue to provide primary optometric and ocular-disease care at the Bloomington office. “People appreciate our level and quality of care. We take care of patients as if they were family.”
