Wake Up! with United Way: “Autism Spectrum Disorder – What to Know”

07:45 am to 09:00 am
BloomingTea, 612 W Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington, IN
https://www.monroeunitedway.org/WakeUp

Monthly speaker series featuring breakfast, networking, and an enlightening presentation and discussion of timely topics that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area.

On Thursday, August 8th, the topic, “Autism Spectrum Disorder: What to Know” will be explored by Jim Wiltz, PhD HSPP, a licensed psychologist with 25 years experience working with people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He is the director of Milestones, the clinical division of Stone Belt, that specializes in supporting people with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

Out of every 68 children in the United States, one will receive a diagnosis along the Autism Spectrum. Since the condition impacts brain development and how a person perceives and socializes with others, creating a sense of understanding on the part of community goes a long way towards fostering sensitivity and inclusivity.

This presentation will focus on the basics of Autism Spectrum Disorder, including a brief history of the diagnosis, why there seems to be an increase in the number of people who have ASD, and some useful tips on handling routine daily activities as well as crisis situations. The discussion will include opportunities for questions and answers from participants, as well as resources for those who need supports and services.

Alongside friends, neighbors, nonprofits and community partners, learn more about issues that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area. Attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their awareness about someone else’s reality while learning about the challenges, innovations, collaborations, resources available through area nonprofits, and how to get more involved in making a difference.

Presenting Sponsor: Old National Bank

Cost: The $10 ticket cost includes breakfast and coffee, with any remaining proceeds supporting United Way of Monroe County's efforts to address the community's critical needs today, while reducing those needs tomorrow.
