Wake Up! with United Way

08:00 am to 09:00 am
Virtual Event
https://www.monroeunitedway.org/WakeUp

Join United Way and IU Political and Civic Engagement for a monthly morning speaker series to explore issues that impact our community, friends, and neighbors.

On Thursday, October 8, the topic, “Human Trafficking: Combatting Exploitation and Abuse” will be explored. Human Trafficking is a wide-spread global issue, but unfortunately impacts our local community as well. How exactly is our community affected? What is being done to combat it? Join us virtually on Thursday, October 8 from 8 – 9 a.m. to hear from representatives from Middle Way House and the IU Center for the Study of Global Change to uncover the untold stories of the people in our community fighting for survivors of human trafficking.

Guest speakers are Elaine Banter, Region 7 Coalition Coordinator at the Indiana Trafficking Victims Assistance Program (ITVAP); Dr. Deborah Getz, CYC-P, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Health Science at the IU School of Public Health; and Lindsey Stout, Assistant Crisis Intervention Services Coordinator at Middle Way House.

Alongside friends, neighbors, nonprofits and community partners, learn more about issues that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area. Attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their awareness about someone else’s reality while learning about the challenges, innovations, collaborations, resources available through area nonprofits, and how to get more involved in making a difference. Guests are invited to come with questions for the speakers or just listen and learn.

The series will run through December on the second Thursday of each month. In response to COVID-19, discussions will be held virtually over Zoom from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. until further notice.

This is a free event, but please RSVP by Wednesday, October 7 at 4 p.m. via the Eventbrite link found at www.monroeunitedway.org/WakeUp.

Wake Up! with United Way is co-hosted by United Way of Monroe County and Indiana University’s Political and Civic Engagement program, with support from presenting sponsors Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, and Bloomington Board of Realtors. Thanks also to event sponsor IU Center for the Study of Global Change.
