The City of Bloomington is hosting a public forum on the redevelopment of the current Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital site on Tuesday, October 6, at 6 p.m. via Zoom.
The hospital, which is relocating to the 45/46 Bypass in 2021, sold the 24-acre site of the current hospital to the City of Bloomington in 2018. The City purchased the land with the intention to use it to help meet its goals for “affordable housing, sustainable development, equity, and inclusion,” according to a press release.
The hospital redevelopment site project has stated a commitment to preserving Bloomington as a community that is a progressive, inclusive, arts-oriented, and sustainable. Register for the forum here or visit bloomingtonhospitalsite.com.
Previous community feedback has primarily reimagined the site as a potential green space, group living or supportive housing, or a museum or cultural center. Multi-family housing, retail space, health care facilities, education buildings, and commercial space have also been considered for this location.
Architecture and urban planning firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is overseeing the development of a master plan for the site, incorporating feedback from the Bloomington community.
On October 6, SOM consultants will share an updated master site plan with the public. During the forum, the City will host workshops on topics such as access, open space, land use, and neighborhood character, and will give forum attendees the opportunity to provide feedback that will be incorporated into the next update of the master plan.
The current master plan, which will be presented at the forum, includes feedback given during the August public forum and the results of a recent survey that yielded more than 300 responses. A fourth and final forum will be held sometime in December.
