‘Mandatory Expression: Prague’. Photography by Kyle Spears.

10:00 am to 05:30 pm
By Hand Gallery, 101 West Kirkwood #109
http://www.byhandgallery.com

In this exhibit, Bloomington based photographer, Kyle Spears showcases his most recent body of work from Prague, Czech Republic. Kyle says this about his photography;

Primarily, most of my inspiration comes from traveling and discovering new places/things to shoot. No matter where or what I photograph, I want to capture the beauty I see and somehow communicate that with the viewer. As a photographer, I am attracted to the absence of light, just as much as the presence of light. I love how the night can change the atmosphere and mood of a scene that wasn’t evident during daylight.

IU Cinema: “Death in Venice” film

07:00 pm to 09:10 pm
IU Cinema, 1213 E. 7th St.
http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/?post_type=film&p=5989

In Luchino Visconti’s adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novel, a composer named Gustave Aschenbach (loosely based on Gustav Mahler) takes a break from composition and vacations at a seaside resort in Venice to renew his artistic spirit. He is distracted by a young boy who is vacationing with his family, who represents pure beauty to the frustrated composer. Distraction turns into impatient infatuation, which leads to Aschenbach’s eventual doom. The film is adorned with Visconti’s attention to the costumes, look, colors and sounds of 1911 Venice supplemented with Mahler’s lonely melodies—the adagietto of the Fifth Symphony. (35mm presentation)

Saintseneca w/ Blessed Feathers, High Dive, and Busman’s Holiday at The Bishop

08:00 pm
The Bishop (123 S. Walnut St.)
http://www.thebishopbar.com

Saintseneca will perform at The Bishop, accompanied by Blessed Feathers, High Dive, and Busman’s Holiday. Presented by Spirit of ’68. 18+.

“Saintseneca is a young band from Columbus, Ohio led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zac Little. Following in the footsteps of heartland bands who have sought to twist the music of the old weird America into new shapes – from the Violent Femmes to Neutral Milk Hotel – Saintseneca perform songs that sound familiar and uniquely original, all at once. The group utilizes a wide range of acoustic instrumentation (balalaika, mandolin, dulcimer, Turkish Baglama, floor percussion) with more contemporary elements such as synthesizers and electric guitars to create a seamless blend of soaring vocals and vibrant post-punk energy.”
