05:30 pm to 08:30 pm
Bloomington City Council Chambers at 401 N Morton St. Bloomington IN 47404
https://www.facebook.com/events/236247743821636/

Most Americans agree that family comes first, but the U.S. is the only industrialized country without paid family leave. In one of the richest countries in the world, having a baby, a medical emergency or an aging parent can erase a person’s financial future.

Following the 90 minute screening of Zero Weeks, representatives from the Indiana Institute for Working Families will discuss where Indiana stands with respect to families’ access to paid leave. Participants will then have the opportunity to share their perspectives and personal stories with state and local lawmakers in attendance.

KIWANIS CLUB & PROJECT_ STAY TO PRESENT “YOUR TITANIC POWER TO PREVENT SUICIDE”

06:30 pm to 08:00 pm
The Venue

On Tuesday, August 28th at 6:30 pm, The Venue will defer its’ normal event in favor of a free interactive presentation titled “Your Titanic Power to Prevent Suicide” which will be presented by the Kiwanis Club of South Central Indiana in association with Project_STAY. Presented by Michelle Martin-Colman, the presentation empowers people to recognize and intervene in situations where they suspect someone is going to take their own life.

A certified SafeTALK trainer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and director of Bloomington’s Project_STAY, Martin-Colman will use clips from the award-winning movie “Titanic,” so participants can see how every person, regardless of class, age or gender, can intervene and stop a suicide attempt.

“Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with pain in their lives,” said Martin-Colman. “Most people also believe that if they could prevent someone from taking their own life, they would, but don’t know how. This workshop uses an incredibly well-known film, Titanic, to showcase an example of the ‘how’.”

The workshop is inspired by research from Dr. Mark Besen, PH.D, Psychologist and Master Trainer with the QPR Institute for Suicide Prevention (QPR=Question-Persuade-Refer).

“Your Titanic Power to Prevent Suicide” will be held at the Monroe County Library, with a recommended participant age of 15 and over. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited –

To RSVP for “Your Titanic Power to Prevent Suicide,” email vmmcclary AT msn DOT com by 5pm on Monday, August 27, 2018.
