Movie: Modigliani of Montparnasse (1958)
3:00-4:48 p.m.
IU Cinema
Like its subject, this feature-length biopic of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) had a tragic history. The first director, Max Ophüls, died suddenly during filming; the second director, Jacques Becker, passed away within two years of its completion; and the actor, Gérard Philipe, was gravely ill and died at 36 (the same age as the artist he portrayed) before the film’s release. While these sad coincidences overshadowed the film, it is recognized for its cinematography and a narrative approach that is more of “a fantasy, a hallucination, a nightmare” than straight biography. In French with English subtitles. (HD Presentation)
This program is presented in partnership with IU Cinema and is sponsored in part by Marsha R. Bradford and Harold A. Dumes. The talks and films are free and open to the public.

Buskirk-Chumley Theater

Having left the Army following W.W.II, Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, as the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General.
All of the songs in this film were written by Irving Berlin, including holiday classics such as “White Christmas,” which won an Oscar for best original song, and “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” which was also an Oscar nominee.
As with all film screenings at the BCT, costumes are encouraged!
