Eagle Watch Weekend offers an opportunity to see at least twenty-eight eagles, forty-nine other species of birds, and life birds for several people on almost every outing. It doesn’t get much better than this. That was what we wrote about the 2012 event and the 13th Annual Eagle Watch Weekend this year is shaping up to be even better.

Californian Jeremy Sweet creates wood panel pieces with free-form edges expertly using a wide range of mixed media. Lose yourself in the velvety blacks and seemingly endless textures of Kelly Franke’s eleven-foot high charcoal drawings. Ben Pines shines in a new set of portrait paintings. Susan Forney’s exuberant acrylics entertain echoes of Miro and other mid-century artists.

The Challenge starts at the Paynetown Activity Center (located next to the beach). You may begin anytime between 10 am and 1 pm. All cachers who complete the entire Challenge by 4 pm will be entered into a drawing to win a 2013 State Parks & Reservoirs Entrance Pass.

“Year One” of this Challenge series took you on an overview tour of every state recreation area on Monroe Lake. For “Year Two,” we’ll be focusing exclusively on Paynetown SRA. Lot less driving, lot more hiking! Participants should dress for the weather, wear good hiking shoes, and bring your own GPS unit.

A morning for buying local foods and an hour of yoga, sponsored by Vibe Yoga! 10 am-11 am, Harmony School Dance Studio. Dress in comfortable clothing and bring your yoga mat. If you don’t have a mat extras will be available. FREE. This week’s yoga instructor is Krista Coston. Krista is passionate about bringing yoga to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Certified at the 200hour level from Vibe Yoga Studio in December 2011, she has been teaching and practicing basic level and advanced yoga classes since that time. A classically trained vocalist, Krista emphasizes breath above all else in her yoga classes and its ability to calm the mind and body. She is thrilled to be working with practitioners of all levels at the Bloomington Winter Farmers’ Market.

Several new exhibits can be seen at the Indiana University Art Museum. The galleries are open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm, and Sunday, 12 pm to 5 pm.

Paul Strand’s “Street People”

Paul Strand’s revolutionary photographs, published in the final double-issue of Alfred Stieglitz’s Camera Work, shocked the art world not only with their unadulterated approach to the medium, but also with their gritty, realistic subject matter. This installation features three close-up portraits of some of the “invisible” beggars, hackers, and passersby found on New York City’s sidewalks.

“The Many Faces of a Master”

Pablo Picasso (1888–1975) was not only one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, but he was also one of the most recognizable. The IU Art Museum has a large collection of portraits of artists. This installation features several photographs of Picasso at work or play by Lucien Clerque, Robert Capa, and Brassaï.

Contemporary Explorations: Reviewing Nature in the 1980s

Drawn from the museum’s collection of works by graduates of IU’s fine arts department (now the Hope School of Fine Arts), this installation examines the artists’ interpretations of the natural world. Reviewing Nature takes a look at the balance sought between structural composition and the role nature plays in co-defining the space we both share. This installation was organized by Emily Wood, graduate assistant for Western art after 1800 at the IU Art Museum.
