Sincerely Yours: Stationery Voices from the Archives

08:00 am to 05:00 pm
Wells Library E460
https://libraries.indiana.edu/archives

Sincerely Yours: Stationery Voices from the Archives explores how letterhead, a common utilitarian object, serves to connect us to the social, industrial, and political expressions of our society and reflects the changing world of design. Scholars of the subject suggest the growth in the rich illustrations on stationary correspond with the advancement of American industrialization. This exhibit, with content drawn entirely from the collections of the Indiana University Archives, sets aside the content of the dispatches and focuses instead on the personal and societal stories told by via the letterhead itself. Featuring letterhead from businesses such as South Bend’s Studebaker Corporation to the international Shell Motor Oil company, personal stationary (well, hello, John D. Rockefeller!), travel destinations including nearby West Baden resort all the way to the German city of Leipzig, and, of course, Indiana University!

Maceo Parker

08:00 pm
Buskirk-Chumley Theater
https://bctboxoffice.org/event/maceo-parker/

With an impeccable pedigree and the tightest little funk orchestra on earth, Maceo Parker‘s name is synonymous with funk music. Maceo has played with each and every leader of funk, starting with James Brown—an experience that Maceo describes as “like being at university”—then jumping aboard the mothership with George Clinton and serving as a fixture in Prince’s tours. He has wound his way through the history of funk as one golden thread.

Parker’s collaborations over the years have included performances with Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, the Dave Matthews Band, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base. Parker received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation for his contribution to the R & B genre, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from Les Victoires du Jazz in Paris. He was also awarded an Icon Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, with an inscription that begins: “Maceo Parker, a music-maker and world-class performer for almost fifty years, distinguishes himself through exceptional musicality and craftsmanship. The inspired and indefatigable saxophonist has made an indelible mark on soul, funk and jazz.
