Join museum educators as we continue our month of celebrating black scientists. This week we will be talking about John Dabiri, whose research covers topics like jellyfish and wind power. We will complete an activity to learn more about wind power. Participants will learn STEM skills through play. Activities are designed for ages 3-6, all are welcome.

Our February Science Explorations theme is Science and Civil Rights. WonderLab believes in amplifying the work of many scientists and recognizes the importance of diverse representation in our museum and across our programs. We strive to put these beliefs into practice 12 months a year. We also recognize that February is Black history month and historically, not all voices and faces have been well represented in fields of science. So during the month of February, we are paying respect to the careers of Black scientists and conducting experiments that reflect their work. Join us and learn about Percy Julian, the research chemist that received more than 130 chemical patents. One of Julian’s discoveries was an aerated foam made from soy protein and water, that coats fire in oil, depriving the fire of oxygen and smothering it. This foam was used during World War II and came to be called “bean soup.” We will do our own experiments with beans, exploring germination. This program supports Indiana K-6 life science standards as well as NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) in Life Science. Materials are not necessary, but feel free to have dried beans, paper towel, water, and a plastic bag on hand.
