Being Poland: A New History of Polish Literature and Culture Since 1918

04:00 pm to 06:00 pm
The CAHI House
http://www.indiana.edu/~cahi/htmlemail/2019/2/being-poland.shtml

Join us at CAHI as we celebrate the publication of Being Poland: A New History of Polish Literature and Culture Since 1918, coedited by Tamara Trojanowska (Univ. of Toronto), Przemysław Czapliński (Adam Mickiewicz Univ., Poznań, Poland) and IU’s Joanna Niżyńska.

Several of the book’s contributors will be on hand for a discussion: coeditors Tamara Trojanowska and Joanna Niżyńska, editorial assistant Agnieszka Polakowska (Univ. of Toronto), Bożena Shallcross (Univ. of Chicago), Karen Underhill (Univ. of Illinois at Chicago), George Gasyna (Univ. of Illinois at Urbana Champaign), and Benjamin Paloff (Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor). The discussion will be moderated by IU’s Bill Johnston (also one of the book’s contributors) and Russell Valentino. A reception will follow.

Being Poland offers a unique analysis of the cultural developments that took place in Poland after the First World War, a period marked by the country’s return to independence. Conceived to address the lack of critical scholarship on Poland’s cultural restoration, Being Poland illuminates the continuities, paradoxes, and contradictions of Poland’s modern and contemporary cultural practices, and challenges the narrative typically prescribed to Polish literature and culture. Spanning from Poland’s cultural grand narratives to the politics of post-war cinema, poetry, and mass media, Being Poland is a comprehensive reference work written by a transatlantic team of sixty scholars with the intention of exposing an international audience to the explosion of Polish culture that has come out of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Presented by the Polish Studies Center, the Institute for European Studies, and the College Arts and Humanities Institute.

This event is free and open to the public. If you have a disability and need assistance, arrangements can be made to accommodate most needs. For more information, please email [email protected] or call (812) 856-1169.

JOAN HAWKINS works in poetry, prose, creative nonfiction, and spoken word performance. Her work appears in the Ryder, 3 a.m., Sand and The Performing Arts Journal. She co-organized three major arts festivals in Bloomington: The Burroughs Century, Wounded Galaxies, and Wounded Galaxies 1968; and currently chairs The Writers Guild at Bloomington. She is the co-editor of a major anthology on William S. Burroughs, Cutting Up the Century, which is forthcoming from Indiana University Press. And she is collaborating with Kalynn Brower on an anthology about rape escapes. When she is not writing poetry, she teaches Cinema and Media Studies in The Media School at IU Bloomington, and has written extensively on horror, punk cinema and the avant-garde.

TONY BREWER is a poet, event producer, voice actor, and live sound effects artist from Bloomington, Indiana. He is executive director of the Spoken Word Stage at the 4th Street Arts Festival and his books include: The Great American Scapegoat, Little Glove in a Big Hand, Hot Type Cold, and coming this spring: Homunculus, from Dos Madres Press. He co-founded the first poetry slam in Indiana in 2001 and competed, coached, and toured with a team until 2006; and has been offering Poetry On Demand at coffeehouses, museums, churches, bars, and art and music festivals for over 10 years. Tony is one-third of the poetry performance group Reservoir Dogwoods.

IAN URIEL GIRDLEY explores hope, love, lust, loss, and loneliness against a backdrop of whiskey-colored Southern Indiana daydreams. His voice, sometimes lyrical, sometimes baudy, probes the secret tender areas and unhealed wounds of some romance won and lost. At times brash, Ian’s poems unapologetically embrace the grit and ache of sex while retaining at their core enough humility to be, essentially, love poems.

THE PAPERBACK RIOT is the conceptual love child of Captain Beefheart, Fugazi, Buddy Wakefield, Henry Rollins, mewithoutYou, & Charles Bukowski — a cacophonous riot muscled in the vein of rock and poetry. Featuring Matthew Jackson’s mouth, Jarrett Noel on guitar, Zach White on bass, and drummer Ben Calabrese. Their EP Kiss Kiss Apocalypse is available for download on your favorite flavor of music service.
