Senator Birch Bayh and Politics of Electoral College Reform

Herman B Wells Library
https://libraries.indiana.edu

This exhibit documents the efforts off Indiana Senator Birch Bayh to, first, reform the Electoral College and then, almost immediately despairing of that, to abolish it in favor of direct popular election of the President.

The barriers encountered by Bayh and his staff over a sixteen-year period reveal the complex mix of historical fissures, party politics, congressional alliances, personal relations, political ambitions, and, finally, the coalitions of unlikely bedfellows that can ultimately decide the fate of even a reform supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people.

Documents in the exhibit are from the Birch Bayh Senatorial Papers, which are part of the IU Libraries’ Modern Political Papers collections. Originals of official documents of the Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments had to be returned to the National Archives, so some of the documents in the exhibit are copies made to preserve the completeness of the collection.

Upon My Recent Validation Exhibit Ends

Hotel Indigo
http://www.cmadart.org

CMAD (Columbus Museum of Art & Design) is happy to present “Upon My Recent Validation…” an exhibition of paintings by Chad Serhal at Hotel Indigo. This exhibition will be on display at Hotel Indigo from April 27 through June 30.

Chad Serhal provokes thought using nostalgia; a mother’s kitchen wallpaper design, a father’s favorite actor, or a line from a grandparent’s favorite book. He makes statements using play on words, juxtaposition, and defining titles to force a mundane scene into your consciousness. His work is all within a few inches big because the materials he uses are small.

CMAD will host an artist reception on May 18, which will feature a gallery talk by the artist at 6 PM.

June Featured Artists at the Brown County Art Guild: James Oblack & Mary Riley

Brown County Art Guild
http://www.browncountyartguild.org

The featured artists for the month of June are James Oblack & Mary Riley. A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, June 10 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

James Oblack (Nashville, IN) received his B.S. degree in geology in 1975 with a minor in art. In the mid 70’s, James studied watercolor with Luke Buck, and watercolor soon became his medium of choice. Now, after 38 years, and over 600 art fairs and festivals, he is semi-retired and thoroughly enjoying painting. James became a member of the Brown County Art Guild in 2016.

A poem or line of prose is often the genesis of a painting for Mary Riley (Franklin, IN) and animals the embodiment of that inspiration. Drawing and printmaking were the beginning of Mary Riley’s artistic explorations and now oil on canvas is her medium of choice. Mary became a member of the Brown County Art Guild in 2016.

The Brown County Art Guild is located at 48 S. Van Buren Street in the heart of downtown Nashville. The Art Guild is open Monday – Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 Noon – 4:00 p.m. For more information call 812-988-6185 or visit www.browncountyartguild.org

The Final Week of a Great Show, Sidney Bolam, plus Paintings, by Mark Blaney, a Thinking Person’s Artist, for June at The Venue

06:00 pm to 07:00 pm
The Venue Fine Art & Gifts

On Friday, June 30th, beginning at 6:00p.m., The Venue is pleased to host a final reception for our show of relief limestone carvings by Sidney Bolam, and paintings by Mark Blaney.
Sidney Bolam creates limestone carvings, inspired by nature. Her pieces range in size and complexity from simple carved stones to ornate and intricate scenes. All are practically portable, without a truck or crane. They range in price from $50-800. This is a time when you can give yourself, or someone else, a beautiful piece of art that is literally drawn from the heart of Bloomington.
Do not hesitate. In May The Venue has sold more of Sidney’s carvings than ever before, and she is working non-stop to replenish our supply, thus allowing us to take the unprecedented step of featuring her carvings for two months in a row. It is just that unique and just that good.
Paired at The Venue with Sidney is Mark Blaney, an artist who arrived in Bloomington and has made it his home. And it is a perfect fit. Mark’s paintings are a treat for the eye and manifest his appreciation of nature and people. Each piece has a back story that invites viewers to use their best thinking, to connect and derive the full import of the piece, or better still, to create their own narrative. Because sales have been brisk, we have two new large oils by Mark which have been recently hung, mid-exhibition..
Our regular selection of fine art and gifts will be on display for purchase.

In As Bad As They, Jordan Ternin tries to decipher the fine line between her impulses to help and control after her brother Caleb decides to quit using. The siblings are reunited on the most dangerous day for an addict, the day he’s released from state custody. On this day the dosage that Caleb handled comfortably two weeks before could cause his death.
