New in the Galleries:
Onya LaTour: Pioneering Modern Art in Indiana
Continuing through May 10, 2015
Gallery of the Art of the Western World, Doris Steinmetz Kellett Endowed Gallery of Twentieth-Century Art, first floor
In 1941 Onya LaTour opened the Indiana Museum of Modern Art near Nashville, Indiana, creating a stir in local art circles. Two works from her personal collection are featured in this installation presented in conjunction with Onya LaTour on view at the Indianapolis Museum of Art this fall, to which the IU Art Museum loaned four pieces.
WWI War Bond Posters
Continuing through May 24, 2015
During World War I, mass-produced color posters encouraged enlistment, helped raise capital for the war effort, and solidified public opinion against the enemy. Two vintage posters for war bonds, one American and one French, are featured: although both depict a German soldier, they have very different styles and impacts.
Nature’s Small Wonders: Photographs by Ansel Adams
Continuing through May 24, 2015
America’s most famous nature photographer, Adams was also an ardent conservationist who served on the board of directors for the Sierra Club for thirty-seven years and was active in the Wilderness Society. He used his dramatic black-and-white photographs to encourage the preservation of America’s natural wonders, particularly those found in the U.S. National Parks.
This installation is on view from January 13 through May 24, 2015, in the Gallery of the Art of the Western World, Doris Steinmetz Kellett Endowed Gallery of Twentieth-Century Art. It is presented in conjunction with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Sycamore Land Trust, whose mission is to protect the beautiful natural and agricultural landscape of southern Indiana.
Finding Atget
Continueing though May 24, 2015
French photographer Eugène Atget’s imagery mixed a nineteenth-century aesthetic with a modern sensibility, garnering him admiration and respect from the young Berenice Abbott, who became his champion. This installation features a vintage print by Atget and several later prints from his original negatives.
Women behind the Camera
Continuing through May 24, 2015
The world of professional photography in the early- to mid-twentieth century was largely a men’s club, but a small group of talented women paved the way for future generations of female “lensmen.” Portraits by three of these pioneers—Imogen Cunningham, Berenice Abbott, and Toni Frissell—are featured.
Pop Textiles
Continuing through May 24, 2015
Textiles designed by Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Lindner, and Claes Oldenburg are featured. These bold and inventive compositions on fabric blur the boundaries between fine art, craft, and industrial production.
Robert Salmon: Romantic Painter
Continuing through May 24, 2015
Two paintings by Robert Salmon help elucidate the artist’s foundation in English Romanticism, which continued to inform his painting after his move to Boston in 1828.
Focalpoint: Fantastic African Hats: Power, Passage, and Protection
Continuing through May 24, 2015
These twelve richly embellished African hats celebrate the prestige of their owners, evoke complex histories of trade and commerce, and provide protection from harm. Organized by Brittany Sheldon, graduate assistant for the arts of Africa, the South Pacific, and the Americas.

IU Cinema: Thundercrack!
03:00 pm to 05:30 pm
IU Cinema 1213 East 7th Street, Bloomington, IN 47406
http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/thundercrack!
As the punctuation mark affixed to its title might suggest, Thundercrack! is a study in excess. Directed by Indiana-native Curt McDowell and co-written/co-starring cult icon George Kuchar, the film follows a group of outré strangers (including an amorous gorilla) as they spend the night breaking social-sexual taboos in a gothic setting that queerly reimagines James Whale’s The Old Dark. It’s a forgotten entry in the canon of 1970s underground filmmaking that reminds us that the line between tastelessness and the sublime is very fine indeed.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction from Jamie Hook, a Ph.D. student whose work centers on taste politics and stigmatized films, genres, and spectators. Contains graphic nudity. (Digital presentation)

Set in a New England boarding school, Robin Williams stars as an inspirational English teacher who helps the young men under his tutelage find their passions through poetry and the arts. Fighting against an uptight administration all the way, Williams shines in one of his earlier starring roles, proving his dramatic talent while never losing sight of the manic comic energy he was most famous for. Working from an Oscar-winning script, Peter Weir directs with the sort of spirit embodied in Williams’s performance. Carpe diem! (35mm presentation)

HEADLESS World Premiere Screening
07:00 pm to 09:00 pm
The Buskirk-Chumley Theater - 1001 E. 3rd Street
https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pe/9980999
In this “lost slasher film from 1978,” a masked killer wages an unrelenting spree of murder, cannibalism, and necrophilia. But when his tortured past comes back to haunt him, he plunges to even greater depths of madness and depravity, consuming the lives of a young woman and those she holds dear.
Headless is the latest feature from the creators of Found, winner of 18 best picture awards and an official selection at more than 40 film festivals around the world. Headless is a spin-off of Found’s most controversial sequence, a brutally horrific ‘movie within a movie’ that has been censored in the UK and Germany, and banned–not once, but twice–in Australia. Now, that infamous sequence has been expanded into a full-length feature film for gore hounds, lovers of exploitation movies, and hardcore horror fans.
Headless was filmed entirely in Indiana by a Bloomington-based team, featuring makeup and special effects from The Clockwerk Creature Company and music by Magician Johnson and Andy D. Directed by Arthur Cullipher, written by Nathan Erdel, produced by Kara Erdel and Scott Schirmer. Starring Shane Beasley, Kelsey Carlisle, Ellie Church, Dave Parker, Kaden Miller, Brian Williams, Jennifer Lee, Haley Madison, Matt Keeley, Emily McGee, Jessica Schroeder, Ben Monticue, and Olivia Arnold.
The film screening (90 minutes) will be followed by Q&A with the cast and crew (30 minutes).
Headless features nudity, profanity, drug use, extreme violence, and disturbing subject matter. No one under 18 will be admitted.
