“Secret Impressions: The Reproduction of Erotica Prior to the Camera” by The Kinsey Institute

01:30 pm to 05:00 pm
Indiana University, The Kinsey Institute, Morrison Hall 3rd Floor
http://kinseyinstitute.org

The Kinsey Institute art and library collections contain thousands of examples of erotic imagery produced over centuries by artists around the world. Secret Impressions presents a selection of lithographs, engravings, etchings and woodblock prints from the mid-19th century and earlier. These artworks from France, England, Italy, Germany, Holland, and Japan illustrate the means by which pornographic and erotic images were mass produced before the invention of the camera. Wealthy collectors could commission paintings, but others could purchase prints at a lower cost. Once photography was invented in the 1830s, it quickly became a popular medium for depictions of the nude figure, as well as erotic imagery. The first photographic process to become widespread was the daguerreotype, which produced a unique image. With the invention of a process that used a negative to make multiple photographs, the mass production of erotic images became possible. Hold That Pose features daguerreotypes, tintypes, albumen and gelatin silver prints, stereocards, and other examples of photographic processes that were used in the 19th century by professional photographers to produce and distribute erotic material.

The Kinsey Institute is open to visitors from 1:30 to 5:00 pm weekdays or at other times during office hours by appointment only. Admission is free. Due to adult content, visitors should be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. To schedule a group guided tour of The Kinsey Institute, please call 812-855-7686.

Fresh Exhibition Featuring Mark Blaney

06:00 pm to 08:00 pm
The Venue Fine Art & Gifts - 114 South Grant

We welcome you Friday, March 6th, at 6:00pm, The Venue Fine Art & Gifts will host a Reception for an Exhibit of all new works of Award Winning Artist, Mark Blaney. A Bloomington resident, Mark has shown his work around the world and around the country,

beginning in 1994.

Marks paintings reveal that he is first and foremost a colorist, with a healthy respect for line and form as well. Inspired by the likes of Gauguin and Degas, Marks paintings are drawn from nature, and often portray an American Southern narrative. Most aptly described as post modern impressionism, Mark defies categorization by exercising his freedom to explore color, line, and form, in his own unique style. This exhibit will also include Mark’s latest drawings, watercolors, small sculptures and more!

The Venue will provide refreshments for the occasion. Our complete collection of fine art and gifts will also be on display for viewing and purchase.

This show will run at The Venue until March 19th.

IU Cinema: Hard to be a God

07:00 pm to 09:50 pm
IU Cinema 1213 East 7th Street, Bloomington, IN 47406
http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/-Hard-to-be-a-God

When legendary Russian auteur Aleksei German died in 2013, he left behind this extraordinary final film, a phantasmagoric adaptation of the revered sci-fi novel by the Strugatsky brothers (authors of the source novel for Tarkovsky’s Stalker). Hard to be a God began percolating in German’s consciousness in the mid-1960s, and would actively consume him for the last 15 years of his life. Happily, he brought the film close enough to completion for his wife and son to apply the finishing touches immediately after his passing. Taking place on the planet Arkanar, which is in the midst of its own Middle Ages, the film focuses on Don Rumata, one of a group of earth scientists who have been sent to Arkanar with the proviso that they must not interfere in the planet’s political or historical development. Treated by the planet’s natives as a kind of divinity, Don Rumata is both godlike and impotent in the face of its chaos and brutality. (2K DCP presentation) Intended for mature audiences.
Brief introductory remarks and a post-film discussion will be provided by Professor Richard H. Durisen.

08:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Players Pub
http://www.theplayerspub.com

Luke Austin Daugherty is the real deal Songwriter. He is from the Martinsville/Mooresville IN area and has developed a loyal and large following for his music. He is a word guy – GREAT lyrics, but he is a seasoned musician and performer as well. It doesn’t take long for the Audience to realize they are in the presence of an extremely good Singer-Songwriter when they hear Luke Austin Daughterly. Luke will be joined by Butch Ross – an amazing musician coming in from Chattanooga TN to perform for y’all this evening, this fellow will knock it out of the park as he performs on dulcimer, banjo and other instruments we don’t get to hear often – and his SONGS are just out of the ballpark good. He’s funny, he’s clever, and he’s worth his weight in gold as a Songwriter. Bruce Kell is a local fellow who loves to entertain his Audience. His songs are often silly and/or funny, and he enjoys making his people laugh. He also performs with his flute – not what you’d expect from this Folksy, Country kinda guy. He is just amazing when he breaks out the flute and plays some of his original compositions – As if all of this wasn’t enough – tonight is our monthly OPEN GUEST –Share-A-Chair evening – so if you are a Singer-Songwriter who would like to sing a tune – email us at [email protected] and reserve one of the five open spots.
