“The Beautiful And The Good”, an exhibit of paintings by Jennifer Mujezinovic, will be on display at gallery406 from April 5 until May 31. Gallery is open from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday.

“Beautiful”—together with “graceful” and “pretty,” or “sublime,” “marvelous,” “superb,” and similar expressions—is an adjective that we often employ to indicate something that we like. In this sense, it seems that what is beautiful is the same as what is good. Beauty does not always correspond to what we see superficially. Socrates was notoriously ugly, but was said to shine with an inner beauty, and Plato believed that the sight of the “senses” must be overcome by intellectual sight.

In Jennifer’s portraits, she is seeking an ideal beauty through a synthesis of a pleasing physical body, and a spirit that is good. This synthesis expresses a Psychological Beauty that harmonizes body and soul. Each one illuminating the other.

Ryan Dorgan’s photographs “Back Home Again” and Michael Lierly’s paintings “Memory, Myth, & Immersion” will be on display through the month of May. Gallery is open Monday – Friday, 10 am – 5 pm.

“Walk the Walk, Art Lives”: Paper Art Quilts by Mary Hambly
The art of Mary Hambly, founding member of the committee that started Gallery Walk, is honored with this exhibit of her work. The Paper Art Quilt is a joining of contemporary art and traditional craft, a blending of individual elements in such a way that the joining allows for a richer and more meaningful whole. In the creative process stenciled, marbled, printed, and over dyed papers are cut, pieced, and then stitched using a zig zag sewing machine. The resulting “quilt blocks” are then laid out in a composition, sometimes born out of the repeating pattern concept of traditional quilting, sometimes not. The “quilt” is then completed with a border, also of paper, and the result is a one of a kind image.
Exhibit runs until Thursday, July 25.

“Doing the Dance”: Woodcut prints by Dale Enochs
Sets of four woodcuts that when displayed together make a single composition or tetraptych. One tetraptych, Tantric Sideshow is based on a visit to Bhutan and is a reference to the elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water. A second tetraptych 21st Century Dance Cards is inspired by the Gulf Coast oil spill and also by environmental and war issues.

The Kinsey Institute is offering two shows this spring and summer, both featuring a wide range of artworks from our permanent collection. “Face Value” explores the various ways that artists utilize the portrait, an art form that has existed for millennia, for the exploration of individual identity and experience. This exhibition in the main gallery includes contemporary and vintage photographs, as well as paintings, prints, and sculpture. One of the featured artists is renowned photographer Judy Dater. “Casual Encounters,” in the institute’s Corridor Gallery, takes a look at intimate yet anonymous sexual interactions, as depicted by European and American artists from the 18th century to the present day.

The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 1:30-5 pm weekdays. Admission is free. Due to adult content, visitors should be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Every Monday evening at The Player’s Pub, the Songwriter Showcase series displays the talents of local and regional artists. No cover is charged, but donations are appreciated. Player’s Pub has an all-ages section, as well as the main 21-and-up area, and serves a wide variety of entrees, sandwiches, appetizers and drinks.

Monday nights at 9 pm, The Bluebird nightclub features an evening of karaoke hosted by local favorite Dave Walter. Free admission. Ages 21 and up. Check Bluebird website to confirm.
