This exhibit at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures is a companion piece to the book by Eric Sandweiss, and presents a survey of Cushman’s extraordinary work, an archive of photographs that is the largest known body of early color photographs by a single photographer—14,500 in all, most shot on vivid, color-saturated Kodachrome stock. It will run until December 21.

The month of November brings a number of new exhibits to the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center. William Fillmore sculpts figures that are extraordinarily life-like but served with a twist—you will be amazed, amused, and possibly even frightened. Whether on vessels, wall hangings, or large scale sculpture, every clay surface that Barry Barnes touches erupts in a profusion of color, texture, and pattern. Indianapolis artist Carol Myers offers a sheaf of what she calls “pencil prayers”, graphite meditations with watercolor accents, lightly layered in encaustic wax. And the Ivy Tech fine arts students will be presenting their fall semester projects.

All exhibits on display through December 1, during regular gallery hours: Monday through Friday, 9am – 7pm; Saturday 9am – 5pm.

During the month of November, the City of Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) will showcase paintings in watercolor created by members of the Bloomington Watercolor Society (BWS) in the Atrium of City Hall. Exhibit is free and open to the public during regular hours (9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday). Runs until November 30.

This installation, running from September 11 to December 31, will focus on three photographers Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Weston, and Harry Callahan, who used their romantic partners as their subjects. Whether portraits or nude studies, these images reveal a sensitivity that comes from the artists and sitters’ close personal relationships.

This installation is presented in conjunction it the special exhibition “A Place Aside: Artists and their Partners,” on view at the Kinsey Institute Gallery, September 28–December 20.

Artists working in Paris and Lorraine during the Baroque period developed distinctive styles—which focused on the vibrancy of the line—that differed markedly from their Italian and Dutch contemporaries. The two print kiosks in the early part of the gallery feature French works by Jacques Bellange, Claude Lorrain, Jacques Callot, and Claude Mellan, whose engraving is a tour de force of printmaking that creates the face of Christ using a single line.

Gallery of the Art of the Western World, Doris Steinmetz Kellett Gallery of Twentieth-Century Art, first floor. The British Pop artist Joe Tilson used tabloid journalism and news photography as the basis for many of his prints and multiples of the late 1960s. Becoming increasingly political, he saw the pictures of revolutionary leaders and current events as a means for social commentary. This installation will include several of his works from this turbulent period.

The Grunwald Gallery of Art is pleased to announce Buzz Spector: “Off the Shelf”. This exhibition will be on view through Saturday, November 16, 2012. The exhibition is part of a broader discussion of the relevance and role of books and libraries in the arts and humanities. Spector is an eminent figure in the artists’ book and book arts communities and an internationally known artist and writer. He has published numerous artists’ books as well as editing the critical volume The Book Maker’s Desire: Writings on the Art of the Book.

Exhibit is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 4 pm.

This exhibit, “A Place Aside: Artists and Their Partners,” is on display at the Kinsey Institute Gallery and will run from September 28 to December 20.

Since the invention of photography, the camera has been turned towards loved ones to document birthdays, vacations, graduations, and other significant events. For each of the couples included in this exhibition, however, photography is not a method of simply recording events but a means of exploring their partnership through the creation of art. While the photographs serve as documents of a couple’s life together, they also reveal the trust and respect that each partner has for the other.

The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday, 1:30 pm-5 pm.

“Gender Expressions” uses contemporary photographs, fine art prints, and other materials from the Kinsey Institute collections to illustrate the various ways that people express their gender identity or challenge societal expectations about gender roles. A selection of magazines, books, newspaper clippings, and other materials from the library and archives takes a look at transgender history in the United States. Artists represented in this exhibition include Mariette Pathy Allen, Jess Anthony, Herbert Ascherman, Mia Beach, Heather Christoffer, Jess T. Dugan, Leonor Fini, Danielle C. Head, Hans van der Kamp, Vivienne Maricevic, Len Prince, Carson Rader, Sarah Taavola, and Cara Lee Wade. Exhibit is open every weekday until December 20.
