Déjà Vu Art and Fine Craft Show

10:00 am to 04:00 pm
The Commons
http://www.facebook.com/DejaVuArtAndFineCraftShow#!/DejaVuArtAndFineCraftShow

Sixty professional artists who make something special from almost nothing will participate in the fourteenth annual Déjà Vu Art and Fine Craft Show at The Commons in downtown Columbus, Indiana. The show has become a premier event in southern Indiana, drawing artists from across the Midwest. Admission to the event held in celebration of America Recycles Day is free.

All items in the juried show must be made wholly or in part from scrap or repurposed materials, and show attendees learn that new beauty can be found in worn leather jackets, broken dishes, mismatched silverware, old sweaters, factory waste and hundreds of other things. The range of creative work represented includes assemblages, glass, jewelry, sculpture, wearable art, weaving, woodworking and some creations which each year defy classification.

Potpourri of the Arts

07:30 pm
IU Auditorium
http://www.iuauditorium.com/events/detail/potpourri-2018

The African American Arts Institute, Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, and the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs is proud to present the 25th annual Potpourri of the Arts. Since 1993, the Potpourri is IU’s greatest celebration of African American performance with its three ensembles: the African American Dance Company, the African American Choral Ensemble, and the IU Soul Revue.

With a wide range of music and choreography, these unique ensembles are sure to exhilarate audiences with their individual and combined performances. The African American Dance Company will share a broad range of movement and dance traditions from America and the African Diaspora, including African, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and other cultural forms. Then, hear the best of African American spirituals, gospel, and formally-composed works with the African American Choral Ensemble. To complete the line-up, IU Soul Revue will perform dynamic Black popular music—including R&B, soul, funk, and contemporary music styles.

To top off the evening, all three ensembles will grace the stage together in a collaborative finale piece. Don’t miss this incredible and celebratory event.

Music from the Sistine Chapel

07:30 pm to 09:30 pm
St Mark's United Methodist Church
http://www.chambersingers.info

Under the baton of music director Gerald Sousa, the group’s 49th season opens on Saturday, November 10 at 7:30 pm with an evening of a cappella music in the pure, ethereal style of the High Renaissance. “Music from the Sistine Chapel” presents works composed for the late sixteenth-century Papal Court, featuring Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, the composer’s most well-known mass. Also on the program will be large-scale motets, including Allegri’s famed Miserere and Lotti’s Crucifixus. The concert will take place in the resonant sanctuary at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 100 State Road 46, Bloomington, IN.

Although many people often feel they’re unfamiliar with sacred Renaissance music, its beautiful tonality, powerful reverence, and interesting textures move listeners of all backgrounds. The Chamber Singers’ focus on authentic performance practice and passionate connections with the music shine through every performance. As an auditioned group of about 40 singers, the choir demonstrates a commitment to attaining the highest standards of choral music.
