Prior to Wednesday night’s performance of Waitress, join IU Auditorium for a pre-show lecture given by Dr. Nicole Martins, Associate Professor at IU’s Media School. The lecture will focus on women in media and will address topics such as gender disparities behind and in front of the screen and what this means for the audience.
Dr. Martins currently teaches Social Scientific Perspectives of Gender and Media, which examines the representation of women in the media and analyzes women’s creative work as media producers. The course addresses women’s employment in media industries, women as an audience/consumer group, and visual representation across media platforms.
Dr. Martins has published over two dozen scholarly articles and book chapters, and her work appears in a wide range of peer-reviewed journals. She has received numerous top paper awards from the National Communication Association and International Communication Association. Recently, Dr. Martins was a featured speaker on a panel concerning the representation of girls in the media, sponsored by The White House Council on Women and Girls.
