Before the reservoir was built, small communities and family farms were spread throughout the Salt Creek valley. That same valley became dotted with cemeteries of all sizes, from single plots to larger platted burial areas. This program will focus on the cemeteries that were relocated when the reservoir was built – we’ll visit the remnants of one, the former location of another, and then take a walk through the cemetery that was created specifically to hold the relocated graves. 2 hours 30 minutes

Giambattista and Domenico Tiepolo: Master Drawings from the Anthony J. Moravec Collection
Judi and Milt Stewart Hexagon Gallery, first floor

This exhibition highlights the most important gift of Old Master drawings in the Eskenazi Museum of Art’s seventy-five year history. In 2010, Anthony J. Moravec, a Columbus, Indiana, businessman, donated twenty-four drawings by the eighteenth-century Italian master Giambattista Tiepolo, his son Domenico, and several of their contemporaries. The centerpiece is a group of a dozen drawings from Domenico Tiepolo’s New Testament cycle. These large pen, brush, and ink drawings are not studies for other works, as was more typical of the period but rather unique designs that showcase the artist’s deep understanding of the religious subject matter and his careful observation of the world around him. The exhibition’s guest curator and catalogue author Adelheid M. Gealt–the Eskenazi Museum of Art’s Director Emeritus and an expert on Domenico’s drawings–believes that the series (numbering 320 known sheets) represents a feat unparalleled in the history of art.

The Eskenazi Museum of Art serves as the only Midwest venue for this major traveling exhibition, which covers more than twenty-five years of the internationally acclaimed artist’s career.
This exhibition was developed by the High Museum and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography in collaboration with curator Arthur Ollman, photographer, professor, and founding director of the Museum of Photographic Arts. The Eskenazi Museum of Art’s presentation is made possible in part by generous support from David and Martha Moore, David H. Jacobs, Judi and Milt Stewart, Nancy and Bill Hunt, Del and Letty Newkirk, Jeff and Margaret Jones, and Susan Thrasher.

New in the Galleries: More, More, More
Gallery of the Art of the Western World, first floor

In conjunction with the fall special exhibitions, the museum’s first floor gallery will feature three additional works by Vik Muniz, including one based on Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and numerous works by Giambattista and Domenico Tiepolo.

Focalpoint: Hats as Materials of Culture

In conjunction with the course Art, Craft, and Technology in sub- Saharan Africa (offered by the Department of Art History during spring 2017), this installation considers hats made by different communities and from a variety of materials. Organized by Emma Kessler, curatorial assistant for the Arts of Africa, the South Pacific, and the Americas.

Before the arrival of the Spanish in 1532, Peru had seen the rise and fall of numerous cultures and artistic styles, not just those of the Inca Empire, for which it is so well known. Because these civilizations lacked written records, we gain our understanding of their histories and societies through their art and archaeology. Focusing primarily on ceramics from cultures before the time of the Inca, this installation encourages visitors to explore less familiar arts and traditions.

Old Hollywood Glam

This installation features “head shots” of leading ladies from Hollywood’s Golden Age (1920s-40s), including Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Vivien Leigh, Gloria Swanson, and Anna May Wong, by photographers George Hurrell, Angus McBean, and Edward Steichen. Through the lens of professional portrait photographers, we can examine how stars, publicists, and movie moguls constructed an artificial image of beauty and promoted it as the glamorous, sexy standard for American women.
This installation is presented in conjunction with the 2016 Themester “Beauty.”

The Art of Presidential Politics

Continuing through December 31, 2016

In conjunction with the 2016 presidential election, this installation features several twentieth-century artworks that reflect on the institution of the American presidency, including a satirical cartoon for a 1960 New Yorker cover by Saul Steinberg; Andy Warhol’s tragic Presidential Seal in memory of President John F. Kennedy; and a print by retired IU faculty member Rudy Pozzatti that was drastically altered following the Watergate scandal in the early 1970s.

Modern Sculptors in Indiana

Continuing through March 12, 2017

Several modern sculptors of national and international prominence were born in Indiana, worked in the state, or came here to study. This installation features the work of artists Robert Laurent, David Smith, George Rickey, David Hayes, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, and (from October onwards) William Wiley, all of whom have Indiana connections. This installation is presented in conjunction with the Indiana State Bicentennial and has been endorsed as an official Bicentennial Legacy Project.

How does art influence the healing process? How does art promote health and well-being? From educational materials to popular songs on public health topics, art has an important role to play in our health. Bob Einterz, IU School of Medicine Associate Dean for Global Health; Donald E. Brown, Professor of Global Health, Professor of Clinical Medicine; Daniel Reed, Associate Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, and Ruth Stone, Laura Boulton Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology will discuss their research on the cultural, economic, spiritual, and educational dimensions of art within a public health context. The event will be free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington.
