https://www.facebook.com/events/247192795836781/

Indiana University Press will host the third annual Quarry Festival of Books on Saturday, October 13. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dunn Meadow on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. The event is sponsored by Bloom Magazine and WFIU/WTIU.

The Quarry Festival of Books brings together local and regional authors to celebrate a blooming community of readers and writers in the Midwest. Over 20 authors of fiction and general interest titles will be present to autograph books and meet readers with more than 100 individual books available for purchase. The festival will include special giveaways, discounts on books, book readings and events, and a fun coloring center.

“Indianapolis and several other large cities around the country regularly host book festivals to provide local residence a chance to meet and talk to authors,” said Dave Hulsey, Associate Director of Indiana University Press. “With the thriving publishing community in Bloomington, we believe our community would appreciate the same opportunity.”

The Quarry Festival of Books will be the same day as IU Homecoming. It will be a tented event.

The True Nature of the Mind: A Buddhist Perspective

01:00 pm to 03:30 pm
Kadampa Meditation Center Bloomington, 406 S. Walnut St. Bloomington, 47401
http://www.meditationinbloomington.org

In our everyday experience, our stress and negative emotions often seem to pervade our life. However, unpeaceful states of mind are transient, like clouds in the sky. We can use meditation to dissolve them away. When they begin to disappear, we discover and experience something previously unknown, the inner clarity and peace of our very own mind.
In this half-day course, Modern Buddhist Teacher, Tom Mitchell will help us to understand the flexible and limitless nature of our mind. By accessing its’ pure, clear nature through meditation, we can gradually gain the freedom to respond to our thoughts and feelings in the most constructive manner possible. In this way, coming from our own experience, we start to understand how to actualize our potential for the lasting happiness and freedom we seek.
Each of the 2 one-hour sessions includes a talk, guided meditation and time for questions and answers. Light refreshments will be served on the break.
Everyone is welcome to this insightful and practical half-day course.

The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra presents: Made in America

07:00 pm to 09:00 pm

Saturday , October 13th, 2018
7pm, Buskirk-Chumley Theater

Join the BSO for a celebration of music made in the U.S.A.

Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is a different sort of anthem. Composer Terence Blanchard says “Whenever I hear it, it stops me in my tracks and makes me reflect on the goodness of man. And I know that sounds corny for some, but it really makes me think about how, at the end of the day, most people in this country are good people. Honestly, that could have been our national anthem.”

Also on the program, Copland’s Appalachian Spring is iconic American music, deeply embedded and embraced in our culture. Our performance will be of the original chamber version, showcasing the talents of our core musicians.

Ever since its spectacular premiere in December, 1893, Dvořák’s New World Symphony has remained one of the most beloved works of the symphonic repertoire. Dvořák’s tribute to his newly-adopted country is powerful yet sentimental, filled with a sweet longing for the promise of a better life.
