Ghostly Gathering

Ghostly Gathering, Monroe Lake’s celebration of Halloween, is scheduled for Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 at Paynetown State Recreation Area, 4850 S. State Road 446 in Bloomington.

All programs and events are open to both day visitors and campers. If you want to camp, don’t wait too long to reserve your campsite at camp.in.gov; while non-electric sites are still available, the electric ones are already fully booked.

Programming begins on Friday, Oct. 26 with “acorn skulls” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. From 5 to 6:30 p.m., you can make a scarecrow trick-or-treat bag. Ghoulish ghost stories take place around the fire at 8 p.m.

Saturday activities get started with creepy, crawly crafts from 1 to 3 p.m. The costume contest follows at 4 p.m.; prizes are awarded to individuals in 6 age categories (including adults), as well as the best costumed canines and the best group costume (2 or more people competing together).

Trick-or-treating in the campground is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Campers can also compete in a campsite decorating contest, which will be judged during the same time frame.

The event concludes with a Ghostly Gathering Halloween Party from 8 to 9:30 p.m., with games, activities, and refreshments.

The property entrance fee for Paynetown SRA is $7 per vehicle with an Indiana license plate, or $9 per vehicle with an out-of-state license plate.

Haunted: Opening Reception for a Spooky Photo & Video Show

Photographers Mike Waddell & Chrissie Dickinson ring in the Halloween and Samhain season with “Haunted,” a photo and video show of their work that puts the spotlight on the spooky, the supernatural and the good old macabre.

The opening night reception is Friday, October 27, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The exhibit will run from Friday, October 27 to Monday, October 30. Viewing hours are 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m on Saturday through Monday.

Both Waddell and Dickinson focus their work on the ghostly allure of distant apparitions, overcast graveyards and remembrances of the dead. The exhibit is a visual examination of the shadows, memories and inner thoughts that haunt us. The show will appeal to fans of smart, subtle horror and devotees of all things that go bump in the night.

Individuals interested in the BA, BFA or MFA programs can explore artists’ studio practices, ask questions about the School’s areas of study, and preview course listings for Spring 2018. All visitors are invited to try their hand at various art-making activities and view student artwork in multiple studio locations. Attendees can find maps and directions in the first floor lobby of Kirkwood Hall and at the Friends of Art Bookshop in the Fine Arts Building. Nighttime tours of President Wylie’s home will explore ghost stories and tragic family deaths, along with Halloween traditions and horrors of the 19th century. Docent led tours will take about 30 minutes and will continue throughout the night from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Please, sign in for tours and enjoy a variety of spooky Halloween activities at the Education Center next door.
