“Axe of Vengeance: Ghanaian Film Posters and Film Viewing Culture” is an exhibition of large-scale posters hand painted on flour sacks to advertise Hollywood, Bollywood, Kung Fu, Nollywood and Ghanaian films circulating in Ghana during the 1980s and 1990s. The posters and the venues where they were shown have become obsolete, as viewing has shifted from makeshift theaters to in home film viewing. The exhibit will feature a recreation of the traditional cinematic space, reproducing key aspects of the original viewing experience where visitors can view the films Isakaba Boys, Secret Adventure, The Snake Girl, and Oganigwe.

http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/
Alison Klayman (Director/Producer/Cinematographer) is a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker. While living in China from 2006-2010, she produced radio and television feature stories for PBS Frontline, National Public Radio, AP Television and others. She also began shooting her debut documentary feature, AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY, following the artist/activist for two years and gaining unprecedented access to his life and work. The film was awarded a Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Defiance at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
When Chinese authorities detained Ai for three months in Spring 2011, Klayman made many media appearances to speak about Ai and her work, including CNN International and The Colbert Report. She has since been named a Sundance Documentary Producing Fellow, and included in Filmmaker Magazine’s annual list of “25 New Faces of Independent Film.”

IU Cinema Presents: ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’
06:30 pm
IU Cinema (1213 E. 7th Street)
http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/
Ai Weiwei is China’s most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic. Against a backdrop of strict censorship and an unresponsive legal system, Ai expresses himself and organizes people through art and social media. In response, Chinese authorities have shut down his blog, beat him up, bulldozed his newly built studio, and held him in secret detention.
AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY is the inside story of a dissident for the digital age who inspires global audiences and blurs the boundaries of art and politics. First-time director Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China. Her detailed portrait provides a nuanced exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compelling public figures. (2K DCP presentation)
The screening is part of the Themester film series, as well as the East Asian Film Series and the International Arthouse Series. It is sponsored by East Asian Studies Center and IU Cinema, with support from Themester, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Communication and Culture, the Center for the Study of Global Change, and IU Cinema. Special thanks to Professor Stephanie DeBoer.
