Electoral Competitiveness and Turnout in British Elections, 1964-2010

Fall 2015 Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, Jack Vowles, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
Analyzing the British Election Study from 1964 to 2010, Professor Vowles has examined the influence of electoral context on turnout, especially the closeness of elections in terms of lagged seat and constituency-level winning margins. Using cross-classified multilevel models to account for individual and contextual factors and disentangle life-cycle, cohort- and election-specific effects, he finds that closeness strongly affects voting behavior, particularly among new electors. Widening seat margins in British elections over the last decades have had a persistent impact on turnout. Study respondents who were exposed to less competitive environments when young are more likely to abstain in subsequent elections than those reaching voting age after close-fought races. One may conclude that variations in competitiveness have had both short- and long-term effects on turnout.

When Art Heals
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Venue Fine Art & Gifts
http://Thevenuebloomington.com
In recognition of September as National Suicide Prevention Month, The Venue Fine Art & Gifts is focusing its Tuesday evening education series on Developing Positive Mental Health and Suicide Awareness and Prevention.
On Tuesday, September 22, beginning at 5:30 p.m., The Venue will host a presentation by Milestone Clinical and Health Services, a division of Stone Belt, focusing on Art as an effective tool in improving mental health. This is the first program in a new series called “When Art Heals,” which The Venue plans to be ongoing and focused on the potential restorative and healing nature of all art forms.
For some, depression or anxiety leaves them stressed, anxious, and even suicidal. Research is uncovering the healing aspects of Art and its effect on developing positive mental health. Art therapists now utilize the therapeutic nature of creativity, as well as a patient’s own use of symbology, as a way to gain insight into issues affecting them that they might not even be aware of on a conscious level. Creating art, in the hands of a skilled therapist, can help people relax in a way that involves creating something- an act that improves self-esteem and helps people regain self-identify, while providing a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Learn how and why.
Light refreshments will be served. You can visit the following link for free parking options near The Venue: bloomington.in.gov/parksmart.

USARS is recognized by the Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) and United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as the national governing body for competitive roller sports in the United States. USARS is dedicated to creating, enhancing and conducting the best competitions and programs for roller sports.
USARS roller derby is a contact sport, requiring skaters to display their skills to maneuver cleanly through the pack to score points by lapping opposing team skaters. Roller Derby demands that its skaters combine a careful balance of precision, strength, teamwork, and strategy. The results are as spectacular to witness as they are to perform. Skaters are penalized for blocks to the back, tripping, jabbing with elbows, and cutting the track, among other things.. For added safety, skaters are required to wear fully safety gear, including helmets, during competition and practices.
