George Cukor’s Gaslight is a melodrama reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological thrillers Rebecca (1940) and Suspicion (1941). Together Cukor and Ingrid Bergman give a wonderfully unnerving portrait of insanity that won the actress her first Oscar. After moving back to her childhood home with her new husband (Charles Boyer), Paula (Bergman) begins to doubt herself and her mental stability. While she is trapped within her house, her neighbor (Joseph Cotten) fights to help her regain her sanity. (35mm presentation)
