La dolce vita would be a documentary if it weren’t so extravagant. Everyone in it really was someone about the Roman scene of the time, and the situations and locations are spot-on as representative of their time. Yet from its first stunning widescreen pan, it’s also a film of the most exuberant camerawork, pointed imagery, vivid performers, and entrancing music, a study of encroaching boredom that somehow manages never to be boring, a modern fresco of decadence. Contains mature content. In Italian language with English subtitles. (35mm presentation.)
