In Winnipeg during the Depression, a wealthy beer baroness, Lady Helen Port-Huntley, (Isabella Rossellini) organizes a contest in support of the city being named Sorrow Capital of the World for its fourth year in a row. The contest offers $25,000 to the country that can produce the saddest music in the world. The contest attracts all manners of characters, including Fyodor Kent and his musical producer son Chester, from New York City. The Kent’s have a history with Lady Port-Huntley that brings out the worst in all parties as motives become clear. Guy Maddin has pulled out all the stops in this dark comedy, musical melodrama.
