Photography and Farm Equipment on exhibit during Monroe County Barn Tour

09:00 am to 05:00 pm
Hinkle-Garton Farmstead
http://www.indianabarns.org

The Hinkle-Garton Farmstead, headquarters of Bloomington Restorations, Inc., will serve as tour headquarters during the Monroe County Barn Tour. The self-guided driving tour is a fund raising event for the Indiana Barn Foundation.

The 1892 main house will be open to visitors and will feature live music provided by members of Friday Musicale, jams and jellies for sale made by site volunteers, and the photography exhibit of Jon Benson. A nonprofessional, photography has served as a lifeline for Benson since about 1997. His black and white photographs, much of them take around the farmstead, were shot using medium and large format film cameras. Benson states, “Folk architecture, light and shadow, as well as randomly forgotten objects appeal to me. I hope that when a person sees my photography they find something in it which is uniquely their own to enjoy.”

The four outbuildings at the farmstead, including the c.1920 gambrel roof barn, will also be open. Inside the c.1900 grain barn will be the exhibit, “Harvesting at the Farmstead,” a collection of small farm implements both donated and original to the site along with photographs and diagrams explaining their use.

Visitation to the farmstead is free and a tour ticket is not required. However, those desiring to attend the tour may purchase tickets in advance or the day of the tour. Advance tickets (cash or check) are available at the Visit Bloomington Visitors Center, 2855 N. Walnut Street; the Monroe County Purdue Extension office, 3400 S. Walnut Street; or online with credit card at the Indiana Barn Foundation website at www.indianabarns.org. Day-of tour tickets will be sold at two of the tour sites only, the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead, and the Munson Family Barn at 6707 W. Rockeast Road. Credit card purchases must be made online.

The Farmstead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned and maintained by Bloomington Restorations, Inc. It is free and open to the public.
