If you can’t make it to Kentucky to watch the upcoming solar eclipse in its totality, Monroe Lake is offering an alternative.
The eclipse will still cover about 95% of the Sun in the Bloomington area. So Jill Vance, Monroe’s interpretive naturalist, is inviting people to come watch the eclipse with her at Paynetown SRA on Monday, August 21.
She will be set up near the swimming beach from 12 and 2:30 p.m. and people can stop by any time during that period.
Vance will have solar viewers that people can use to safely watch the eclipse. Even with almost all of the Sun blocked, the remaining light will still be enough to cause permanent eye damage without proper protection.
As an alternative to looking directly at the eclipse, Vance will also help people make a simple pinhole projector to view it indirectly.
The viewing event will be cancelled in the event of completely overcast/stormy skies. If the sky is only partly cloudy, the program will go on as scheduled; people may just need to be patient and wait for clouds to move.
Questions about this event should be directed to the Paynetown Activity Center at 812-837-9967, or you can email Vance at [email protected].
