During the month of December, the Science Explorations theme is math. We will begin the month by learning the Sieve of Eratosthenes. A sieve is a strainer, used to separate solids and liquids, and Eratosthenes was a Greek scientist and mathematician that made the first measurement of the earth. His sieve sifts out prime numbers. If you are interested in math facts, number patterns, or whether or not 1 is a prime number, you will find something to engage or challenge you. This fun math challenge supports young students learning their math facts including times tables, common denominators, and factors. Older students will find patterns and enjoy mental math challenges. This lesson directly supports Indiana math standards for grades 3-6 and is intended for all elementary ages.
